Statements

by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary

Budapest, August 23, 2011

Libya

We welcome the success of the National Transitional Council in gaining authority over Libya which will enable the advancement of its democratic objectives. The Government of Hungary regards the NTC as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.  Following the meeting of Foreign Minister János Martonyi and the Leader of the Council in March 2011, over the recent months contact with the NTC has been continuous through our special envoy to Benghazi.

The Libyan revolution is a historic opportunity for laying down the foundations of a democratic legal state.  Hungary supports the NTC in its efforts aimed at the consolidation of the situation. We trust that the NTC can soon restore peace and security based on the rule of law and will take the necessary steps to settle and rebuild the country.

We deem the performance of the Hungarian Embassy staff based in Tripoli an outstanding diplomatic success, who, in the uncertain times of civil war, stood tall in representing the interests of the European Union, the United States, Greece, Croatia, Canada and Italy as well”

Syria

Hungary sympathises with the Syrian people’s peaceful demonstrations demanding democratic changes. President Assad has lost his legitimacy, his autocracy has discredited his continual reform promises. The Syrian population deserves the materialisation of its wish for democratic changes. At the moment President Assad is hindering this process, so the time has come for him to step aside.

Hungary calls on President Assad and his regime to immediately halt violence against the civilian population and pave the way for the aspirations to democratic transition, free and fair elections, and fundamental human rights. Hungary supports the desire of the Syrian people to decide on their own future and elect their leaders freely.
