Days of Remembrance Names Reading Ceremony

 

The U.S. Congress established the Days of Remembrance as an annual commemoration of the Holocaust, and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as a permanent living memorial to the victims. This year's Holocaust remembrance week in the U.S. was May 1–8, 2011, with the theme “Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?”

As part of the program of the Days of Remembrance, Hungarian Ambassador György Szapáry contributed to the Names Reading Ceremony on May 6, 2011 in the Hall of Remembrance of the Museum. Reading the names of men, women and children, victims of the Holocaust is a touching way of remembering these individuals.  The Ambassador in his personal as well as official capacity read names of Hungarian victims as a symbolic gesture of Remembrance on behalf of Hungary.

The Days of Remembrance as well as the International Holocaust Memorial Day, marked each year on January 27, and Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Day, marked each year on April 16, are important events of remembering the victims of the Holocaust and of other genocides, and honoring survivors. It should remind us of our duty and moral obligation to make sure that the horrendous crimes committed are neither forgotten, nor repeated in Europe or elsewhere in the world
