2011 International Women of Courage Awards

Ambassador György Szapáry greeted and congratulated Ágnes Osztolykán at the 2011 International Women of Courage Awards Ceremony hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with Special Guest First Lady Michelle Obama. Introducing Ágnes Osztolykán, Secretary Clinton emphasized that she is the first Roma woman ever elected to the parliament in Hungary:

"Agnes Osztolykan of Hungary is, as you heard the First Lady say, the first Roma woman ever elected to the parliament in Hungary. For overcoming racism and discrimination to emerge a leader in elected office, serving as a proud defender of the Roma people and culture, and tirelessly pressing for equal rights and the inclusion of minorities in society, we thank you for your work, we thank you for your example, and we will stand with you."

She praised her efforts to promote the inclusion of Roma in Hungary. A special priority of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is to adopt the European framework for national strategies of the inclusion of the Roma and to provide new momentum for the solution of this important European issue. At the very same day based on the fundamental principle of simultaneously reinforcing the fight against discrimination and poverty, the European Parliament’s report on the Roma Framework Strategy was discussed in Strasbourg. Zoltán Balog, Minister of State for Social Inclusion, contributed on behalf of the Hungarian Presidency. Read more about the Hungarian EU Presideny…
