Hungary Joins Common European Border Area


As of December 21, 2007, the common European area without internal borders, known as the Schengen Area, also includes the Republic of Hungary.

Inside the Schengen Area, there are no internal borders, citizens and visitors can freely travel from one country to another. The citizens of the Schengen countries do not need passports to travel within these countries. Hungary is among nine new Member States (with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) joining the thirteen EU Member States participating fully in the Schengen Area (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden) together with Norway and Iceland.
