Under Secretary of State Karen Hughes Visits Budapest, Raises Breast Cancer Awareness

The State Department's Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Karen P. Hughes, traveled to Budapest, Hungary from September 29 to October 1, 2007.

Under Secretary Hughes gave the keynote address at the the two-day "Ignite the Promise Global Advocate Summit" by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. At the summit, she was joined by presenters from India, Italy, Kenya, and Malaysia who spoke about breast cancer advocacy, education, health care providers, and fundraising. Under Secretary Hughes also participated in the annual "Bridge Walk" for Breast Cancer Awareness organized by Hungary's "Bridge of Health Alliance" on September 30, alongside Mrs. Klára Dobrev, wife of the Hungarian Prime Minister and Nancy Brinker, founder of the Komen Foundation,  former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary and current U.S. Chief of Protocol.

She gave a speech about the Transatlantic Agenda at the Central European University in Budapest. Under Secretary Hughes met with Dr. Márta Horváth, Hungary's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. She furthermore had a discussion with young Hungarian political leaders.
