Hungary's Foreign Minister Visits the US

Kinga Göncz, who became Hungary's Minister for Foreign Affairs in June 2006, visited the United States for the first time in her new capacity.

Beyond her extensive program related to the UN General Assembly, Minister Göncz also paid a visit to Washington DC. On the evening of September 20, Minister Göncz honored the presentation of Professor Charles Gati's new book on the 1956 Revolution at the Embassy of Hungary. At the event, she spoke of her childhood spent in the shadow of the revolution and repression. She met US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez at the Embassy.

Back in New York, the Minister took part in the dinner of the Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund, a $72.5 million investment fund established in 1990 to accelerate the development of Hungary's private commercial sector. On September 22, she held meetings with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel and Paula Dobriansky, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs.

Minister Göncz then traveled to Cleveland where she met with the local Hungarian community on September 23.
