Ambassador Szombati in MacFarland Middle School

Ambassador Béla Szombati visited MacFarland Middle School on February 25, 2010. He met the 5th graders who participate in the Embassy Adoption Program. The Ambassador highly appreciated having been greeted in Hungarian by the class. The correct pronunciation of „Jó napot kívánok!” was a truly impressive achievement by the children.

Continuing the curricula started by Mrs. Zsuzsa Szombati, wife of the Ambassador who talked about Hungary’s geography, natural treasures, cultural heritage and language in January, Mr. Szombati gave a PowerPoint presentation with interesting details about the country’s 1000 year long history. He explained about the origins of the Hungarian statehood and various important turning points of the country’s history.

The students showed a lot of interest in the past and present of Hungary asking dozens of excellent questions about events and historic sites in the country as well as about the cultural heritage.

Ambassador Szombati concluded his presentation by talking about today’s Hungary: its values as well as its society, politics and economy. He told about traditional and national holidays, Easter and Christmas customs - pointing out differences between the Hungarian and the American way of celebrating.

The Ambassador congratulated to the class’ teacher, Ms. Ashley Connick for the tremendous job and expressed his appreciation to Ms. Njambi, Coordinator of the Embassy Adoption Program and Ms. Stephanie D. Scott, Secretary of the District of Columbia in the Executive Office of the Mayor for their valuable contribution.
