Yesterday, Ambassador Simonyi visited Pál Maléter, Jr., the
eldest son of Pál Maléter, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution's Minister of
Defense, who was executed along with Prime Minister Imre Nagy and others in a
Budapest prison on June 16, 1958, on charges of attempting to overthrow the
Hungarian People's Republic.
Ambassador Simonyi had an interesting talk with Mr. Maléter and
his wife Andrea at their home near Capitol Hill about their memories of the '56
revolution and how Hungarians living in Hungary, the United States, or anywhere
in the world will celebrate with dignity the 50th anniversary of the Revolution
in 2006.
The Ambassador also congratulated Congressmen Tom Lantos and Tom
Tancredo, Dr. László Gutay, Dr. I. Stephen Szara, Jim McCarger and Stephen
Sisa, honorees of the Colonel Commandant Micheal Kováts de Fabriczy Medal of
Freedom, that was conferred on them by the American Hungarian Federation at a
reception on Capitol Hill to commemorate the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
