Embassy Celebrates National Day, Remembers 1956

The Embassy of Hungary hosted a National Day reception on October 24, remembering the 1956 revolution against communist tyranny. After Ambassador Simonyi's opening remarks, actor and former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay shared his recollections and thoughts on the Revolution.  Mr. Hargitay, who left Hungary in the 40's, fought back tears as he remembered leaving Hungary and finding a new life in the United States.  In his speech he declared that the Hungarian Revolution was a victory over Communism right there and then in the streets of Pest, despite the Soviet occupation that followed.

On the occasion of the National Day, Ambassador Simonyi presented the Officer's Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary upon Ms. Eva Pusta and Mike Haltzel, and the Commander's Cross Order of Merit to Debra Cagan.
