Hungarian Government Moves to Deploy 165 Troops to Iraq Through NATO

The Hungarian Government decided yesterday to deploy 165 troops to the NATO Training and Implementation Mission in Iraq. This force will replace the present Hungarian force serving in Iraq.

The decision is already in force as the Constitution does not require parliamentary approval of the resolution adopted by the Government concerning Hungarian participation in NATO operations.

"The decision of the Government is yet another tangible manifestation of Hungary’s commitment to the stabilization of Iraq along with other coalition forces," said Ambassador András Simonyi. “We had made clear on several occasions that Hungary won’t abandon Iraq and the coalition. The Hungarian flag will continue to fly in Iraq as well as Tampa, Florida.”

Today, Hungarian Foreign Minister Ferenc Somogyi talked on the telephone to National Security Advisor and future U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who called the Government's decision a "serious contribution" to international efforts in Iraq.
