The
Embassy of Hungary and the József Bátori Scout Troop of the Hungarian
American Community living in the greater Washington area held a jointly
organized, traditional Christmas Celebration on Saturday, December 13,
2003. The cheerful and intimate event started with opening remarks from
Viktor Szederkényi, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy, who expressed
his appreciation for the leaders of the scout troop and the parents for
their invaluable work in maintaining and preserving Hungarian customs,
traditions and culture in the United States, and passing them down to the
younger generations.
The
members of the scout group presented a program of music and poems,
including the traditional Nativity play, in order to evoke the atmosphere
and circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ. The program continued with
the singing of Hungarian Christmas Carols with audience participation, and
a Hungarian dance party for children and other activities. Hot chocolate,
pastries, and a special Christmas present from the Embassy helped to keep
up the good spirits.
