Rebuilding the world possible through greater cooperation, larger freedom and tolerance

Press Release by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány on the 5th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks

Five years ago on this day, the free world had to learn that even security is a global expression now: it can only be understood if it is interpreted the same way everywhere, overseas and in the more distant places of the Earth. The main lesson from the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, in New York, and those taken place since in Madrid, London or the Middle East, is that the fate of distant nations, religions and cultures is in closer interdependence than we had previously thought. Due to this, we do not only need to work for our home security far away from home but we also need to make this world a place of more solidarity, tolerance and openness, with everyone doing their best within their own capabilities.

Terrorism is waging a war against our daily peace in which there are no rules - therefore this cannot be defeated through military tools. Only with greater cooperation, larger freedom and more tolerance toward each other.

Finding, stopping and eradicating the groups behind international terrorism attacks is our common responsibility and our urging task. Hungary has been a devoted supporter and active participant of the international war on terror from the beginning. It can be viewed as symbolic that Hungary launches its two-year mission of leading a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan on the day of the 5th anniversary of the terror attacks on New York.

It is our common interest to build a world in which security before September 11 will be guaranteed to all humans, should they live in the United States, Europe or the Middle East.

On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Hungary, I bow my head to all the victims of the terror attack on September 11, 2001, and of all the subsequent acts of terrorism.

Ferenc Gyurcsány

Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary
