Hungary Offers To Accept A Former Detainee from Guantánamo For Resettlement

The Government of Hungary decided on September 16, 2009 to accept for resettlement a former detainee from the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The decision underlines the Government’s commitment to the defense and promotion of human rights, human dignity and freedom, as well as its support to the fight against terrorism. It is also an important step toward the eventual closure of the Guantánamo detention facility, whose existence has diminished the credibility of the efforts of the trans-Atlantic alliance in the defence of international security. Hungary, a reliable ally on the battlefield and  in joint reconstruction efforts, is now offering practical support to the closure of the facility, serving the ideals of freedom and the rule of law.

The decision to participate in the international program designed to facilitate the closure of the detention center through the resettlement and social integration of former detainees has been made after due deliberation, careful consideration and thorough preparation. The government wishes to fulfil its obligations as NATO member and ally, fully considering at the same time the security of Hungary and its citizens. Hungary will admit through this program one person, against whom no U.S. or international legal action has been taken, and who is not in a situation to return to his home country.
