Hungary's NABUCCO Ambassador Visits Washington for Talks on Energy Policy

The Hungarian Government’s "Nabucco Ambassador" visited Washington between May 6-8, 2008 in order to inform the US administration, Congress and the think tank community about Hungary’s energy policy. Ambassador Mihály Bayer assumed this position as of April 1, 2008. During his busy program Ambassador Bayer met with Senator Richard Lugar, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He also held consultations at the National Security Council, the Vice President’s Office and the State Department. He conferred with energy experts at the World Bank and paid visits to various think tanks, such as Center for Strategic and International Studies and Hudson Institute. He also met J. Robinson West, Chairman of the Board and Founder of PFC Energy, as well as Dr. Thane Gustafson, CERA Senior Director of Russian and Caspian Energy.

The appointment of a Nabucco ambassador is in line with Hungary’s commitment to common European energy security. The proposed pipeline, Nabucco, would connect Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria to transport natural gas from the Caspian region to Europe, contributing thereby to the diversification of energy supply, a basic tenet of energy security.
