Shipment of human remains into Hungary

1. Cremated remains

There are no special requirements for the shipment of cremated remains into Hungary, however, the funeral urns must be sealed. If the cremated remains are sent by mail, the package containing the urn should be addressed to the recipient or the cemetery. It is recommended that a copy of the certificate of death be enclosed with the shipment.  Urns can also be brought into Hungary as a carry-on luggage. No additional permits or licenses are required from the diplomatic or consular missions of Hungary.

2. Non-cremated remains

The deceased must be placed in a double casket. The inner one must be firm and entirely airtight, and made of sheet metal (lead or zinc). Absorbent material, such as sawdust, must be placed on the bottom of the inner casket. The body must be soaked in a sublimate solution of 1% strength. The casket must be packed in a wooden coffin, which may again be packed to be protected from eventual damage, or may be covered with canvas or tarpaulin so that the nature of its contents are not revealed. Strong handles must be bolted on the outer packaging. The funeral director should provide a certificate attesting that the above procedure has been followed.

Transporting of objects or flowers with the human remains is strongly prohibited.

The Hungarian diplomatic and consular missions will issue a permit for shipment into Hungary if the following documents are provided:

1. Certificate of the funeral director.
2. Letter of receipt issued by a cemetery in Hungary.
3. Itinerary, means of transportation,  name of the entry point into Hungary.
4. Name and address of contact person in Hungary.

The issuance of the permit is subject to a fee of $24 per document. Those applying through mail should enclose a money order made out to the name of the competent foreign mission of Hungary in the United States, and a self addressed and stamped envelope for certified mail. (In the absence of a SASE, an additional $5 should be sent with the application.)
The Embassy or the Consulate General will arrange for the return of the requested document by express mail service only if the necessary envelopes, fees, stamps, account numbers, etc. are included in the application.

Halottszállítás Magyarországra

1. Hamvak

A hamvak korlátozás nélkül hazaszállíthatók Magyarországra, de az urnát feltétlen le kell záratni. A postai küldeményként feladott urnát a temető vagy az átvevő címére kell küldeni. A halotti anyakönyvi kivonat egyik példányát célszerű a küldeményhez csatolni. A hamvakat tartalmazót urna akár poggyászként is hazaszállítható. A magyar diplomáciai vagy konzuli képviseletektől nem kell engedélyt kérni a hamvak urnában történő hazaszállításához.

 2. Halottszállítás koporsóban

A tetemet kettős koporsóban kell elhelyezni. A belső koporsónak szilárdnak és légmenetesen lezárhatónak kell lennie, amely általában fémből (ólom, cink). A belső koporsó alját nedvszívó - általában fűrészpor - anyaggal kell kibélelni. A holttestet 1 százalékos szublimát anyaggal kell átitatni. A belső koporsót egy fa koporsóban kell elhelyezni. Az esetleges sérülés elkerülése érdekében célszerű a külső koporsót vászonnal vagy vízhatlan ponyvával bevonni. A külső koporsóra erős hordfüleket kell szerelni. Az ügyintéző temetkezési vállalkozónak igazolnia kell a fentieket.

A tetemmel együtt más tárgyakat vagy virágot szigorúan tilos szállítani.

A magyar diplomáciai vagy konzuli képviselet az alább felsorolt iratok bemutatását követően tudja kiállítani a halottszállítási engedélyt:
    1. A temetkezési vállalkozó igazolása.
    2. A magyarországi temető befogadói nyilatkozata.
    3. A koporsó szállításának módja, a szállítási útvonal, a magyarországi belépési határállomás neve.
    4. A magyarországi ügyintéző vagy rokon neve.

A halottszállítási engedély kiállításának díjtétele 24 USD. A postán benyújtott kérelmekhez mellékelni kell az illetékes magyar külképviselet nevére kiállított pénzes utalványt (Money Order) és egy ajánlott levélként felbélyegzett, saját névre megcímzett borítékot. (Ennek hiányában az eljárás díjtétele +5 USD.)
Nagykövetségünk vagy az eljáró főkonzulátus akkor tudja gyorspostával visszaküldeni a kért igazolást, ha a kérelmező előzetesen kiegyenlíti és megküldi a saját nevére kiállított gyorspostai borítékot.
