A Taste of Hungary

The Hungarian Embassy hosted a special wine tasting yesterday. Wine enthusiasts and professionals never had the chance before to try such a wide selection of Hungarian wine varieties in Washington D.C. The tasting was presented by Monarchia Matt International (MMI) from Armonk, NY, a trading company that provides the greatest and probably best collection of Hungarian wines in the USA. Monarchia, a Hungarian-owned entrepreneurship with a headquarter in Budapest, produces its own wines in Eger and serves as an exporter for many top wineries from the most important Hungarian wine regions.

The sortiment was simply outstanding. You could taste complex Bordeaux-style reds from the fast-growing regions of Villány and Eger, and you could also experience the versatility and freshness of the whites from Eger and Etyek-Buda. The visitors had the chance to get acquainted with some of the native Hungarian vine varieties of great potential, like Kadarka. Many people re-invented the new style Bulls Bloods from Szekszárd and Eger that are very much capable of restoring the good reputation of this well-known cuvee. And of course, there was Tokaj, with Zoltan Demeter’s 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from 2000 and the marvelous 2004 Furmint Late Harvest, just to highlight some of the most delicious wines of the region. The imaginary ‘wine of the day’ trophy might have been undoubtedly won by two exceptional wines: Monarcia Cellars’ Nimrod III 2003 and Takler’s Regnum Proprietors Reserve 2002. Both represented a perfect blend made from carefully selected grapes by two very talented Hungarian winemakers.

“Hungarian wines are not like they used to be in the Communist era”, said Ambassador Ferenc Somogyi. “Hungarian wine industry has gone over a significant improvement in the last ten years. Valuable investments have been made to improve equipment, technology, plantations, and wine making methods and I believe that yesterday we were pretty much able to see their favorable effect. I am especially glad that anybody came here and tasted these wines could realize that Hungary is much more than aszú wines from Tokaj. We have a selection that satisfies everybody’s taste.”

Connoisseurs and laymen both had a chance to find their choice in the wide sortiment
